Prawns masala is a spicy recipe which is quick and easy to prepare with few basic ingredients. Prawns masala is rich in flavors and will make a good recipe for all sea food lovers.

Prawns masala can be prepared quickly and does not take much of your time. The masala is hot and slightly tangy. It can be prepared for any parties and gatherings too and can be served as a side dish for roti, bread, chapathi or plain rice.

Cleaned prawns are marinated in spice powders, later sauteed in onions and tomato gravy. Adjust the spices as per your liking’s. Here the masala is semi gravy, but you can make it dry or with gravy too.

For marination:

250gm prawns/shrimps

1 tsp red chilli powder

1 tsp coriander powder

½ tsp pepper powder

1 tsp ginger garlic paste

½ tsp lemon juice


For Masala:

1 inch cinnamon /chakke

2-3 cloves /lavanga

½ tsp fennel seeds/ saunf

1 big onion, chopped

2 tomatoes, chopped

1 tsp ginger garlic paste

1 tsp red chilli powder

½ tsp coriander/dhaniya powder

½ tsp garam masala powder

¼ tsp turmeric powder

1 spring curry leaves

2 tbsp coriander leaves, chopped




  • In a bowl, take cleaned prawns. Add salt, red chilli powder, coriander powder, pepper powder, ginger garlic paste and lemon juice.
  • Mix everything well and rest it for 10-15 minutes at room temperature.
  • Heat a kadai/pan and add 3 tbsp oil. Once oil is hot, add cinnamon, cloves and fennel seeds.
  • Add curry leaves and chopped onions. Fry on a medium flame till onions turn light brown. Add ginger garlic paste and sauté well till its raw smell goes.
  • Add tomatoes and mix. Cook tomatoes till mushy. Add turmeric, red chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala powder. Fry for 2 minutes on a low flame.
  • Now add marinated prawns and mix with the onion-tomatoes and spices. Fry on a medium flame for 2-3 minutes. Close the pan and cook for some time. Add water as needed.
  • Stir in between and check for salt and other spices. Add if required.
  • Once prawns are cooked well, transfer it to a serving bowl and add chopped coriander leaves.
  • Serve Spicy Prawns Masala with roti/bread or rice.


  • Adjust spices as per your liking’s.
  • Marinated prawns can be first roasted in oil and then mixed with the masala and spices too.
  • Add water as needed. If you want gravy, add little more water. Else you can dry fry them too.
