This Mutton curry is spicy, delicious gravy which is very easy to prepare with basic ingredients. Mutton is cooked to tender in spicy masala gravy with aromatic spices to get a perfect and delicious mouthwatering Mutton curry.

Always chose tender and fresh meat to make the curry. You can marinate the mutton and cook it directly in a pressure cooker. Mutton pieces are marinated with spices and cooked. Mutton is further cooked in a spicy masala on a slow flame to get the perfect blend of all spices. Mutton masala gravy/curry can be served with rice, roti, chapathi etc.

½ kg (500gm) Mutton

For marinating Mutton:

½ tsp turmeric powder

1 tsp garam masala

1 tsp red chilli powder

1 tsp ginger garlic paste

2 tbsp curd


For gravy:

10-12 cashew nuts (opt)

1 stick cinnamon

3-4 cloves

2 cardamom /elaichi

2 onions, sliced

2-3 tomatoes, chopped

1 tsp ginger garlic paste

1 tsp red chilli powder

½ tsp dhaniya powder

1 tbsp meat masala powder

2 spring curry leaves

Fresh coriander leaves, handful





  • Wash mutton pieces well in water several times. To the cleaned mutton add, salt, turmeric, red chilli powder, garam masala, ginger garlic paste and curd. Mix well and keep aside for 1 hour.
  • In a pressure cooker add marinated mutton and cook for 3-4 whistles.
  • Soak cashew nuts in water for 10 minutes. Grind it to smooth paste.
  • Heat a kadai and add 3 tbsp oil. Add cinnamon, cloves and cardamom. When the spices splutter, add sliced onions, curry leaves and sauté well till onions are light brown in color.
  • Add ginger garlic paste and fry till its raw smell goes. Add chopped tomatoes and cook till mushy.
  • Add red chilli powder, dhaniya powder, meat masala powder and fry for a minute or two. Add grinded cashew paste and mix.
  • Now add cooked mutton pieces along with its water. Mix everything well and add salt to taste. Close the lid and cook on a low flame.
  • Cook the mutton in the masala gravy till done. Add water as per the consistency you require. The spices and masala should very well coat with the mutton and it should be soft and juicy.
  • Once done, add coriander leaves and fresh curry leaves.
  • Serve hot with rice/ chapathi.


  • Select fresh and tender mutton to make the curry.
  • The curry can be made completely in a pressure cooker. Follow the procedure as above and cook mutton for 5-6 whistles or longer depending on the mutton.
  • Curry leaves gives a nice flavor to the curry. Hence add little more.
  • Cashew nuts are optional. It gives a nice texture and taste to the curry.
